The best part about teaching is seeing how people take what I share and then run with it! And holy moly, did Maria Lisa Militello do just that!
When she posted these images in The Missing Link: A Film Photographer's Guide to OFF Camera Lighting Facebook group I almost fell out of my chair!
Can you even believe that these are not natural light?
Here is what Maria has to say about them.
"These photos were taken of my beautiful friend, who is expecting her first child, next month. To know Suzy, is to love her. She is also a photographer, lover of Fuji400h and all things light & airy!
I shot these with my canon 1v in my studio. I just used one strobe with a giant umbrella. Some of the photos I shot with the strobe on a 45 degree angle and others I shot with the strobe at a 45 degree behind her to get them to look backlit.
She was super patient with me in the studio, as I usually shoot digital. I can't wait for her baby boy to arrive to show you just how gorgeous of a family, her, her husband and their son will make, especially on film!"
I wanted to find out a bit more about Maria's journey with off camera lighting... so I asked her a few questions.
What made you interested in learning off camera lighting?
"I always loved my results with natural light + shooting both film & digital, but I couldn't always count on ideal natural lighting & big windows when working outside of my studio. With using off camera lighting and shooting film, I get the best of both worlds and exactly what I have always been looking for!"
How has learning off camera lighting helped your work?
"Off camera lighting has helped my work immensely.
Mostly the different lighting setups that are explained in The Missing Link that correlate with shooting natural light, it totally makes sense to me now and especially with film. I love the way my images come out and how I can get that light and airy look without blowing out the highlights!
Maria, you are my hero! These images are beyond stunning!! Thank you for sharing them with us!
