Film photography's popularity has been growing lately. Not only are my Intro to Film Workshop, Embrace The Grain seats, are sold out this month, even Sandra Coan and Cat Thrasher's Film for the Studio Photographer Workshop seats have been selling like hot cakes. I don't see why there is a reason that you shouldn't shoot more film! Film is AMAZING, because it is the the simplest and easiest medium to photograph with. Yeah, IT IS easier than digital, hands down, no doubt! For those who have been following Little Bellows blog, you know all of us here are swooning over the look of film. Although we are still loving our digital gears, we have very special bond with our film ones. If you have not seen our new features, you should go check them out! We have added Film Photographer Spotlight Feature where I interview a very talented film photographer every month. Be sure to stay tuned for next month's Film Photographer Spotlight because I am bringing a very special guest to you all!! In addition, I also feature many of our fans' film submissions over on our Facebook page in our Bi-Monthly Film Favorites features.
Today, I want to show you a few of 1984023 reasons why I love film! See these two images below, one was taken with a digital camera, and the other on film. There were taken just seconds within each other. Can you guess which one is film and which one is digital?
Answer: Top/Digital with Nikon D700, Bottom/Film Portra 800 with Nikon F100
So why do I prefer the film image?
- more details in highlights
- beautiful luminosity in highlights
- buttery film grain can't be duplicated
- details in bride's dress
- softer shadows
- more depth
- rich in color and tonality
- Beautiful saturation without editing (film image came as is, no editing added)
Here are just some of the 1984023 reasons why I reach for a film camera more often. Maybe it's time for you to try film as well. Do you know we have a Little Bellows Facebook Group where you can join other film lovers? Come Join us! We would love to see you there :)
